Getting ready for a move can be exciting but, at the same time, overwhelming. A new community to call home, finally being able to decorate the “she shed” just the way you’d like it, and making new friends if you’ve moved from afar.
Excitement can turn quickly to overwhelm without a plan. To avoid the overwhelm that routinely comes with moving, either across the street or across the country, here’s a shortlist of things to consider before you move.
Studies show that summer is the most popular time for families to move. Understandable considering the kids are out of school and the weather tends to be better during that time of year. That said, getting movers arranged could be more expensive, or finding the 26′ U-Haul may be next to impossible, even with a reservation.
If you have a choice, it may be less stressful to move during the spring or fall as demand for movers and trucks tends to be lower and not as many people are moving.
Arranging movers or a truck with ease will reduce your overwhelm and stress.
Packing your home starts well before you plan on moving. Going through your stuff and discarding items you haven’t used or seen for a few years is BRUTAL but a necessary part of getting ready to pack up. Cull out all the things you don’t need and have been hoarding, then pack everything else in sturdy boxes.
Packing has to be the worst part of moving, and knowing that makes it even harder! Put your nose to the grindstone and get it done quickly. You’ll be happy you did, and it will reduce the overwhelm.
The bottom line is that you’re moving and that brings some excitement and maybe some fear of the unknown. Reducing your workload and stress levels makes everything easier. Grind it out, get it done, and you’ll be a happy camper!
Once you’ve got your things reduced down and packed, let the movers or “the boys” handle the big stuff.
Once you have decided what time of year to make a move, doing your research and finding the right mover is critical. If you’ve got a Realtor helping you sell your current home, ask them for local referrals. Realtors generally have a good feel for movers in their area and can help you find a good one.
If you’re not going to hire a professional mover, make sure to reserve a truck in advance. Finding a moving truck may be challenging, so start early and reserve one. Once you’ve got a buyer for your home, your first task is to reserve a moving truck. If the sale doesn’t close, and you have to start over, you can always cancel it.
